Taylor Swift Joins the Cast of ‘The Giver’

Taylor Swift is the latest addition to the cast of Phil Noyce’s “The Giver.”


The Weinstein Company and Walden Media’s adaptation of Lois Lowry’s 1993 YA novel stars Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges. Streep will play Chief Elder, while Bridges will be the title character.

Brenton Thwaites, Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgard, Odeya Rush and Cameron Monaghan round out the cast of the dystopian drama.
 
Taylor will play Rosemary, the last teen mentored by The Giver before he meets Jonas.

Forest Growth on the Faroe Islands
Forests - not exactly what one associates with the Faroe Islands - rather the contrary. The North Atlantic archipelago is known for its treeless appearance. Climatic and geographic conditions, human influence and centuries of sheep-breeding have left the islands practically treeless.

Forests of the Past
But it has not always been that way. If we go back to the volcanic period millions of years ago, we note that there have been periods of extensive forest growth. Charred wood residues, and prints from leaves and needles are found in the coal strata in Suðuroy and Mykines. These finds indicate more favorable times on the mini-continent, which the current Faroe then were part of. Cypress, yew and juniper, giant sequoia and various kinds of deciduous trees - it's hard to imagine today.

After the Ice Age and the Settlement
When the Faroes were colonized, there were some natural woods on the islands. The only indigenous conifer was juniper, which is thought to have been quite common back then. Today this wood only appears in its original form, on the island Svínoy, but we have found roots of juniper in the peat layers on other islands as well.

Of deciduous trees were Dwarf Willow, Woolly Willow and Arctic Willow quite widespread, but Woolly Willow and the Arctic Willow are almost extinct because of the extensive sheep farming.

Birch has also grown wildly in the Faroe Islands since the last ice age, but rather dispersed - and disappeared after the colonization.

We also know that hazel has grown in the Faroe Islands around year 1000, but whether it was a native Faroese tree or it was planted by the early settlers, is uncertain. The hazel tree disappeared again around the 13th century when the climate became colder.

Plantations
There has, through time, probably always been a few trees at farms and in gardens on the Faroes, but not in any large scale. In 1885 there was an attempt to replant trees on a large scale outside Tórshavn, but this failed. In 1903 they tried again and this time it worked. This plantation became what we today call “Viðarlundin” in Tórshavn - a recreational area in a valley, which today is centrally located near Tórshavn City. In 1969 the plantation was expanded and again in 1979, and is now the biggest "forest" in the Faroes. Besides the plantation is also a grove surrounding the former TB sanatorium in Hoydalar, now high school, and on the field called Debesartrøð, where the Provincial Library and the Faroese University is located.

In December 1988 a violent hurricane-ravaged the islands. Wind speeds were up over 60 meters per second and the hurricane caused extensive damage on houses and trees. A very large proportion of the trees in the Plantation in Tórshavn were destroyed in the hurricane winds. The subject of the 10 DKK stamp depicts a cluster of these trees which are still lying on an incline. Extensive work has since been done to restore the plantation, and today it appears as a very beautiful area with young and old trees.

Besides in Tórshavn more plantations were planted in the early 20th century on the surrounding islands. In 1913, for example, the almost equally famous plantation in the small settlement Selatræ was planted, and the following year the plantation in the village Kunoy, which is depicted on the 12 DKK stamp. The plantation in Kunoy was originally larger than it is today, 17,000 square metres were planted - but today only approx. 7,800 square metres are covered by trees, and the grove is thus the smallest plantation in the islands. One oddity of the plantation in Kunoy is that it is planted around a giant rock, which in ancient times probably has fallen from the mountain Urðarfjall above the plantation. The rock, called Eggjarsteinur, can also be seen on the stamp.

There have since been planted several groves around the Faroes. In Vágur and Tvøroyri on Suðuroy - in the villages Miðvágur and Sandavágur on Vágoy - in Mikladalur on Kalsoy - and also the beautiful park, "Uti í Grøv", by the city Klaksvík on Borðoy.

ICELAND 2011 - Snæfellsnes National Park

The theme of the joint issue of 11 small nations in Europe (SEPAC) is landscape. The motif of the Icelandic stamps in this third and last issue is Snæfellsjökull (Snæfell Glacier) National Park. Former motifs for the Icelandic SEPAC stamps were Jökulsárgljúfur and Skaftafell. SEPAC stands for Small European Postal Administration Cooperation. This cooperation is primarily concerned with issuing postage stamps but also includes sales and marketing. Snæfellsjökull National Park was founded by a legislation on nature conservation in June 2001 and is the fourth national park in Iceland. The area is characterized by its extremely diverse geology. Formerly it was the site of hectic activity with up to 60 fishing boats and 300-400 seamen during the fishing season. Among the the books that have carried the name of Snæfellsjökull around the world is the novel by French author Jules Verne „Journey to the Centre of the World“.

 

Colonial Heritage - Emerging Identity - 2011 AUSTRALIA

This stamp issue is the second in a four-year series titled Colonial Heritage, developed to commemorate Australia's philatelic history. It focuses on emerging colonial identity, representing the shift in colonial thinking, reflecting a greater sense of belonging in the "new" homeland.

While once colonists had defined thenselves by their cultural proximity to Britain, the maturity of Australian-born generations, temporal distance, economic griwth and political development all helped shape a sense of distinctiveness from Britain. The colonies growing self-confidence was expressed through their readiness to grasp and mirror local symbols, such as flora and fauna. Queen Victoria would continue to feature in stamp designs throughout the 19th century, but increasingly she shared this small visual space with a constellation of local images. This stamp issue represents that shift in colonial thinking, reflecting a greater sense of belonging in the "new" homeland.

Kangaroo and Lyrebird
The kangaroo and the lyrebird originally featured in stamps marking the 1888 centenary of New South Wales, the first adhesive commemorative stamp issue to be released worldwide. The kangaroo, flanked by the Sydney flannel flower, was in a one shilling (1/-) brown design; the lyrebird, bordered with waratahs and honeysuckle, was in an eight pence (8d) magenta design. The other Australian colony to feature a kangaroo was South Australia, using it in a blue two-and-a-half (2½d) stamp design released in 1894.

Black Swan and Southern Cross
The Black Swan has a strong place in Western Australia's philatelic heritage. It remained the central motif of the colony's stamps from its first issue, in 1854, until stamp production was transferred to the Commonwealth in 1902. The Southern Cross featured on many Australian colonial stamps, the first of which was the five shilling (5s) New South Wales medallion stamp of 1861. This resonant symbol of the south also appeared in the designs of one Western Australian stamp, six Victorian stamps and four New South Wales designs, including stamp duty and charity designs.

Forget Batfleck. Will Justin Bieber be the next "Man of Steel" sequel casting choice to set the Internet ablaze?

The singer posted a photo of himself Friday night with a script for "Batman vs. Superman," written by David S. Goyer and Zack Snyder. The cover page features a "Bieber" watermark, as if the script were meant specifically for him.

 Bieber's photo was liked more than 346,000 times just four hours after being posted, and sparked a number of comments from distressed Batman fans, with one young woman declaring "Batman would be ruined forever" and others wondering if the teen star would play Robin.

Miley Cyrus Headed for First Hot 100 No. 1 With 'Wrecking Ball'

 

It looks like Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" is about to smash its way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

Thanks to expected enormous streaming totals for the song's video, early indications are that it should dethrone Katy Perry's "Roar," which leads the list for a second week this week.

If "Ball" blasts to the summit, Cyrus would collect her first Hot 100 No. 1. She's reached No. 2 with 2009's "Party in the U.S.A." and her previous single, "We Can't Stop."

 According to data provided by YouTube, "Ball" boasts 15.5 million U.S. YouTube views over its first two days since the clip premiered on Monday (Sept. 9). Projected over seven days, the streams for the song and video could total a whopping 30 to 45 million in the U.S., a figure that would count toward next week's Hot 100.

Taylor Swift open to more acting roles

Taylor Swift says she hasn't ruled out taking on more acting roles in the future.

The We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together singer has already played parts on the big and small screen - she has appeared in Valentine's Day, New Girl and CSI - and she has admitted she wouldn't rule out more in the future if the ideal project "came along".

She told E! News: "That's always something that's in the back of my mind, if the right thing came along."

Miley Cyrus broke records this week after her video for "Wrecking Ball" became the most viewed video on Vevo. 


Cyrus can be seen completely naked and gyrating on a wrecking ball while singing about heartbreak. The video received over 19 million views in 24 hours on the first day it premiered, beating the previous record held by One Direction for their video "Best Song Ever". The song is currently has over 70million views on Vevo.

While Cyrus may be flying high with "Wrecking Ball" this week, the Vevo crown for the most viewed video ever is held by Justin Bieber for his song "Baby" which has over 898 million views.

Metallica’s Rob Trujillo: 2014 Will Be All About Making a New Album

Metallica have been firing on all cylinders recently when it comes to their workload. The legendary thrash band has put a tremendous amount of energy into two years of their Orion Music + More Festival along with creating the soon-to-be-released 3D film ‘Metallica: Through the Never.’ Despite Metallica’s work ethic, bassist Rob Trujillo  admitted recently that all of the band’s side projects have “sidetracked” plans for a new album.

‘Through the Never‘ will be released in IMAX 3D theaters on Sept. 27 and regular theaters on Oct. 4, adding yet another monumental project to the band’s resume. Now that the second Orion fest is behind them and ‘Through the Never’ is ready to be shown, Trujillo aims to focus on Metallica’s follow-up to their 2008 full-length, ‘Death Magnetic.’

“Obviously for next year, our priority has to be making a new record,” Trujillo tells Classic Rock Magazine [via Blabbermouth]. “We’ve been detoured from that through the course of the year. We had about six weeks or so where we were really focusing on a new album and writing and then, you know, somehow we ended up hitting the road. And then at the same time we’ve got to promote this film. We get sidetracked by great things — it’s a blessing and a curse. Before all the film stuff, we were jamming these ideas and having a lot of fun. But we got sidetracked. In 2014, it’ll be all about getting new music — without any interruptions, hopefully.”

Eminem New Album 2013 News: Eminem to Release 'The Marshall Mathers LP 2' Bonus Edition With GameStop, Call Of Duty Purchases

Eminem fans who purchase "Call of Duty: Ghosts" at GameStop will be in for a special treat as they will be able to download a special edition of "The Marshall Mathers LP 2."

Justin Bieber Starts Madison Beer's Block Party In 'Melodies' Video

Just last year Madison Beer was a normal teenager, going to school, hanging out with friends and obsessing over her music idol, JUstin Bieber.

"I was a huge huge fan, like I was obsessed with him," Madison Beer told MTV News. "I used to wear purple on his birthday to school with my friends."

Well, it turned out that Bieber was a huge fan of Beer's as well. After coming across a YouTube video of Beer performing at mash-up of Bruno Mars songs, he tweeted the link to his millions of Beliebers, calling her a "future star." Fast forward 14 months later and Beer, who signed with Bieber's manager Scooter Braun, has released not only her first single, "Melodies," an up-tempo pop track she describes as fun and young, but a video  for the track featuring her pop star mentor.

M Shadows Responds To Robb Flynn

Avenged Sevenfold frontman M Shadows has responded to the somewhat unseemly blog  posted by Machine Head frontman Robb Flynn this week that gave a rather tongue-in-cheek critique of Hail To The King.

“Actually, Chris Jericho sent it to me [Tuesday] morning,” Shadows tells Canada’s 106.9 The Bear radio show. “He’s, like, ‘Dude, look at this B.S.’ [He was] going crazy. And I was, like, ‘Ah, Chris, I love you.’ But I read it, and I read it as a joke. I have met Robb on numerous occasions and he’s always been cool to me. And I just read it as a joke. I really don’t know what to say about it other than I agree with him on the Metallica Sad But True thing — that was obviously an inspiration for that song. Everything else, I kind of think he… If it is a joke, it was kind of overboard, ’cause it doesn’t make sense in my mind.

“But at the same time, he was saying it was a joke, so… I have no ill will towards those guys. I’ve met [Machine Head guitarist] Phil [Demmel] a couple of times; he’s cool. Robb is cool. And I think the guy has the right to go make… if it’s really a joke, in his mind… Some people might see it as being as an underhanded… joke. But, to me, if he just wants to go in there and write whatever he wants, I think that’s totally cool. Everyone has an opinion and everyone should be entitled to say whatever they want. Beyoncé, however, may not be around for the last chapter.

Bon Jovi postpones tour following Tico Torres' emergency surgery

Drummer Tico Torres' emergency appendectomy in Mexico City has forced Bon Jovi to postpone concert dates.

The band postponed Tuesday's show in Mexico City after Torres checked into the American British Cowdary Hospital. Jon Bon Jovi revealed in a facebook post  the band is staying with Torres until he is released from the hospital.

Bon Jovi apologized to fans who might have been inconvenienced or were traveling to the concerts in Mexico City, Santiago, Chile, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. The band's website says concerts in those cities have been rescheduled for later this month.

Bon Jovi said Torres wanted to play Tuesday's gig after the surgery. "He wants everyone to know that it was his desire to perform. He even promised the doctors he would come back for the surgery right after the show but the doctors prevailed," Bon Jovi's statement explained.

Ariana Grande Debuts At No. 1 On Billboard 200

 

Though it seemed like there was going to be a race for the No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 this week, Ariana Grande's "Yours Truly" comes out on top by a sizable margin.

The debut effort from the 20-year-old-singer/actress bows atop the list with 138,000 sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Behind it R&B singer Tamar Braxton debuts with "Love & War," which launches at No. 2 with 114,000. (Braxton also bows at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and the Top R&B Albums chart.)

Grande is the first female artist to debut at No. 1 with their first album since January 2010, when Ke$ha's "Animal" opened at No. 1. As for Braxton, she tallies the largest sales week for a female R&B/hip-hop album since last November, when Alicia Keys' "Girl on Fire" bowed with 159,000.

Miley Cyrus' 'Wrecking Ball' director has checkered past

 

Miley Cyrus is getting a lot of flack for her new video, but the director she worked with on the raunchy music video has his own controversial past.
Terry Richardson, who produced her nude “Wrecking Ball” video, came under fire back in 2010 amid accusations that he acted inappropriately with young models, prompting them to take their clothes off in his presence.
In March 2010, Jamie Peck, a model-turned-writer who once posed for Richardson, spoke to FOX411 about her experience with the famed photog.
Peck was 19 years old and not a professional model when she went on a shoot with Richardson six years ago. She said she had no idea what to expect from the photographer, who shoots for Vogue and Harpers Bazaar and commercial clients Jimmy Choo, Sisley and Gucci. Richardson has also photographed stars like Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears and Jessica Alba.
“I went over there the first time and it was pretty normal and I posed nude for him, no big deal," said Peck. "The second time he felt like I was a little more comfortable and he asked me to do some gross stuff. Like he wanted to play with my tampon, and then he convinced me to touch his penis, and I did, and I really still am not sure why I agreed to do that. Part of it was everybody in the room was so stoked, like it was the most natural thing in the world."

One Direction's Louis Vomits After Match Tackle

 

The game at Celtic Park in Glasgow was organised to raise money for a foundation set up by former player Stiliyan Petrov, who retired from the game after a year-long battle with leukaemia while he was at Barclays Premier League side Aston Villa

 A crowd of around 60,000 watched as a Celtic XI lost 5-3 to a Stiliyan Petrov XI.

Ticket sales for the game received a boost when it was announced that Tomlinson, 21, was taking part.

When the pop star came on as a substitute for the Celtic XI thousands of young fans cheered, but many of the older fans in the stadium booed.

His appearance ended prematurely though when he appeared to injure his knee after a shoulder barge from professional player Gabriel Agbonlahor.

As Tomlinson hobbled off the pitch he is said to have vomited, but his manager for the day, Martin O'Neill, said he was okay afterwards.

Katy Perry roars to top of charts

American singer Katy Perry has clocked up her fourth UK number one with new track Roar, ending Ellie Goulding's three-week reign with Burn.

Roar sold 179,500 copies over the past seven days, becoming the UK's third-fastest selling single of the year so far, the Official Charts Company said.

"I feel like the UK is so ahead of the zeitgeist," Perry told BBC Radio 1. "They are the zeitgeist!"

Earlier this week Perry ended Robin Thicke's 12-week run in the US.

Roar became Perry's eighth US number one, overtaking Thicke's Blurred Lines, which has dominated the US Billboard Hot 100 this summer.

Roar, taken from Perry's forthcoming album Prism, now sits just behind Avicii's Wake Me Up and Blurred Lines ft TI and Pharrell Williams, as the fastest-selling singles of 2013.

One Direction's Louis Tomlinson Set To Play First Football Match With Doncaster Rovers

One Direction hunk Louis Tomlinson is set to make his football debut later this month, after signing a football contract with Championship side Doncaster Rovers - for charity!

The singer has been signed as a non-contract player by his home team and will play against Scunthorpe United Reserves on September 18, the Sunday People have reported.

The 21-year-old popstar says it’s a dream come true to play for his home town football club.

"This has always been a childhood dream for me," he revealed, according to BBC Newsbeat. "I feel very honoured to have been asked to sign for Rovers."

She’s performing two special dates in London over the weekend as she continues to promote her new album, but her raunchy outfit demanded as much attention as he music when she took to the stage at the revamped Hammersmith Apollo on Saturday night.

Indeed, Selena Gomez wowed fans at the venue when she opened her set in a pair of tight leather hotpants to perform tracks from current long-player Stars Dance. 

The 21-year-old singer and actress teamed her skimpy bottoms with breezy white top and sheer tights, while the chunky gold chains around her neck gave the overall look a distinctly urban flourish.

Selena completed the look with a pair of mid-length black boots as she worked her way through the opening songs of a lively set that included hit single Come & Get It, Slow Down and Love Will Remember.

One Direction's Liam Payne’s ‘tough days' after explosion

The pop hunk broke his silence last night after the gas blast that left his close pal Andy ­Samuels with 20% burns.

Liam was hailed as a hero for his dash to save Andy from the blaze that destroyed the balcony of his luxury London flat.

The 20-year-old singer took to Twitter to thank fans for showering him with support over the past few days.

He said: “Thanks for all the support at this time. It’s been a tough few days and it’s only made me value everything so much more.” In a separate tweet he then wrote: “@AndySamuels31 the invincible man”.

The singer, who revealed his dream of being a fireman in 1D film This Is Us, told followers his pal was on the mend.

Pharrell Williams 'to write songs for One Direction album'

One Direction fans are about to Get (very) Lucky indeed – the boys are working with Pharrell Williams.

The N*E*R*D frontman is behind some of the summer’s biggest hits after working on Daft Punk’s Get Lucky and Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines.

So if Mystic Meg looked into her crystal ball for 2014 let’s just hope she doesn’t spot Best Song Ever singer Harry Styles grinding in a latex bikini...

I’m told that Pharrell is to pen tunes for 1D’s third album Midnight Memories, which will be weighing down Santa’s sack this Christmas. And there might even be a Thicke vid-style naked model collaboration or two.

A source said: “It is a no-brainer to get together two of the biggest acts in music right now. One Direction want their third album to be their most successful yet and Pharrell is definitely the man to help them achieve this.”

Last month Liam Payne was snapped in a studio with Pharrell, who posted the pic online, saying: “Chilling in the studio with One Direction’s Liam.”

And when I caught up with Pharrell, 40, at the GQ Men Of The Year Awards on Tuesday he confirmed their collaboration.

Metallica Announce First Public Showing Of Metallica: Through The Never

Metallica have announced that a screening of Metallica: Through the Never will take place September 17 at the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael, Calif., in conjunction with the 36th annual Mill Valley Film Festival.

"We'll all be on hand for a post screening interview and audience Q & A with the founder of the festival and Executive Director of the California Film Institute, Mark Fishkin," the band announced in a statement. 

 

"We hope you can join us to watch the film, hang out, and talk about Through the Never.
