On 8 September, 2010, An Post issued eight stamps for the launch of the seventh definitive stamp series, entitled Irish Animals and Marine Life illustrating Ireland’s biodiversity from the seabed to the mountain top.This strip shows the Common Octopus, Hermit Crab, Sea Slug and Bottlenose Dolphin.
Biodiversity is an all-encompassing term used to describe the variety of all life and natural processes on Earth. 2010 is designated the International Year of Biodiversity and this year-long celebration is a unique opportunity to increase understanding of the vital role that biodiversity plays in sustaining life on earth.
For the first time, An Post’s definitive series features stamps in a photographic format with many of these images capturing the personality of the species depicted. In the coming years, approximately 50 stamps will be issued portraying the incredible variety of animal and marine life native to Ireland.
