FINLAND 2006 - 200 YEARS SINCE THE BIRTH OF J.V.SNELLMAN

University professor of philosophy J. V. Snellman (1806 - 1881) was one of Finland's leading thinkers of the 19th century and he is still counted among the country's great men. In order to disseminate his ideas, he founded the newpaper Saima, which accompanies Snellman's portrait as the illustration of the first stamp on the miniature sheet. Snellman became the first person to be depicted on a Finish banknote in 1940. The second stamp shows part of this 5,000 mark note.
The base picture of the second pair of stamps is cropped from a European railway map. This refers to Snellman's background: he travelled great deal and played a part in bringing railways to Finland. The right - hand stamp shows Finland's first railway networks and its first locomotive, Ilmarinen. The left - hand stamp shows the city of Snellman's birth, Stockholm. The same background bears Snellman's portrait.
